Have you been ill? What have your eating habits been like?

Most importantly--is your doctor concerned.

Talk to your doctor for advice for YOU.

Hi,
The amount of weight put on by women in pregnancy varies between 9 and 13.5kg (20-30lb) with themost rapid gain usually between weeks 24 and 32.

Your uterus, plus your baby, the placenta and the fluids will account for more than half of your total weight gain. You also manufacture more blood and lay down fat to prepare for lactation.

Whilst it is not encouraged that anyone should gain an excessive amount of weight, dieting is not a good idea during pregnancy. It is much more important to eat a balanced and varied diet. A British study showed that there was a higher incidence of low-birth weight babies amongst those women who ate less than the recommended levels of calories, vitamins and minerals.

On the other hand, there is a lower incidence of physical and mental abnormalities, spontaneous abortions and neonatal deaths when mothers have relatively high weight gain (though not when they become obese) and babies are born heavier.

It has also been shown that prolonged labours are directly related to the way in which the uterus has grown during pregnancy, and that in turn depends on how well nourished the mother has been.

What You Gain:

Rather than emphasising restriction, nowadays doctors consider that minimum weight gain for most women should be 11kg (24lb). When a woman eats what she needs, her weight gain usually follows a natural and predictable pattern.

You may find you put on weight and your figure changes almost from the time you confirm the pregnancy (6-8 weeks). However your weight gain may be monitored from about 12 weeks at your antenatal checks.

Being Overweight:

Although there is no ideal weight gain to aim for, its still not a good idea for weight gain to be excessive. True obesity presents problems: it puts extra strain on the heart, which is already working at full stretch, and there is an association between excessive weight gain and Caesarean section. It’s thought that when fat accumulates between the muscle fibres of the uterus they work less efficiently and cannot contract enough to finish pushing the baby out once labour has started.

If you’re definitely overweight and have been trying to lose weight, it’s important that you stop dieting when you decide to try for a baby. Unless your doctor considers you are dangerously obese, choose your foods with care when you are trying to conceive and once you are pregnant, but don’t do anything drastic about losing weight until you have finished breastfeeding your baby.

It really depends on the person, I'm 31 weeks pregnant with twin girls and I actually lost 7 pounds by the time I was 17 weeks for the same reason (morning sickness). Til this day I've gained a total of 23 pounds, which isn't too much for a twin pregnancy. But the important thing is that my babies are as healthy as can be.

It's normal to lose and gain weight during the first few months. I started at 170 and went down to 167 then up again. The doctor told me it was normal due to morning sickness or loss of appetite. After your 20th week though you're suppose to gain an average of one pound a week. So from now on you shouldn't be losing weight. Good luck and congrats.

I hear thats very normal and common, and I envy you. I didn't have morning sickness in the first trimester, which usually is the culprit for weight loss during pregnancy. I did, however, quit smoking, which caused me to gain 10lbs right away! After that I gained at a normal rate, but because of that 10 pounds, I've gained twice as much as I should have by now!

I'm not sure how you would figure it out either.. I am 16 weeks and I lost 8 lbs so far and didn't gain any.

I'll be watching your post to see what others may say..

Congrats and Good Luck.
