After reading another thread just now about classic rock, one person said he had a tough time thinking of certain bands as called classic rock. & I actually agreed w/ him on his choices, but was taken aback when he excluded AC/DC.

Well, just wanted to know what/who others consider classic rock.

But here's MY spin on it. (scroll down to "classic rock" blog & feel free to add a comment on it or any other blog)

Agreed w/. a post below. I consider AC/DC firmly in the classic rock category, as they'd started during the classic rock era.(60s - early 80s) Unlike guys like Bon Jovi or GnR...

All I know is, I've heard AC/DC on just about every classic rock station I've listened to. For *years* now.

See, the *original* classic rock era (years mentioned above), were mainly during what most might agree were rock's Golden & Silver ages. (ie: the 60s & 70s, respectively)

Everyone seems to have nailed down the good ground to be covered. I agree with the premise and COMPLETELY agree about the exclusion of bands like Bon Jovi, Poison, or Whitesnake (I just threw up a little). In this day of puting things in pockets and checkable boxes they are clearly "hair metal" or as I like to call (ever since I was furious about a fan vote for VH-1 that left Livin On A Prayer and Pour Some Sugar On Me as 1 and 2 respectively in the top 100 songs of the 80s (I'm a sucker for music lists)) it "soft metal" or aluminum as that's the amount of respect I'm prepared to give it and it's false advertising. I think that as this continues there will/should be more bands added to the list. I think 15 years or so Radiohead would be an example (at least their guitar rock records) of a band that could get past the velvet rope. Maybe, though they have their nitch already, and I admit it's a stretch, a band like Built to Spill. It's about matching sounds and vibes. That's why even really great period bands like Nirvana should not be included. They already have their own trip, their own box that is checked.

As for AC/DC that's tough. They walk the line. I would feel more inclined to leave them out. I think they are classic, probably the kings of the hard rock genre, but sound/vibe wise I kind of go back to the "which one of these is not like the others" game and when you line up Jimi, Led Zeppelin, the Beatles, Pink Floyd, and AC/DC it just doesn't fit for me.

This question had me thinking for a while. If we were to permanently shut the doors to the kingdom, there would never be any new additions to the body of classic rock. Rather, it would be like the nuclear bomb dropped and the world ended in 1982. As we get further away from1960-1980, there will have to be some newer additions, and that would have to include AC/DC. They meet all the criteria, great rock that will live on forever and stand the test of time. Now that modern alternative radio has finally gotten bored of playing Nirvana, Pearl Jam, and Green Day every five minutes, I am sure it is possible they will resurface on the "Senior Tour." In another 20 years, it will be shocking to see Korn and Rage Against the Machine in the classic rock genre, but they will be there too.

AC/DC
Cream/Clapton
The Who
Black Sabbath
Peter frampton
Journey
Boston
Aerosmith
Deep Purple
James Gang
Ten Years After
Blue Oyster Cult
Basically I always was under the impression of the 70's rock bands and singers as labeled classic rock. Thats what you hear on the radio stations that promote "classic rock" as their genre of music. It usually amounts to an era and the 70's is what is getting played for the most part. Maybe it all applies to age and what YOU consider as classic to your own taste?

To me the term classic rock applies to the hit songs from the mid 60's to the 80's which are played on "classic rock" radio stations.
I think it is too broad of a term that also seems to exclude many great lesser known rock bands.
For example, bands like the 13th Floor Elevators, Velvet Underground, Captain Beefheart, and The Stooges.
These bands were very influential however they are hardly mentioned in the Classic Rock context.

Well, pretty much I consider classic rock to be anything that is over 25 years old. Some bands fit, some don't, some have classic songs on one hand, but later stuff is not "classic" yet. The definition in Wikipedia is logical. I listen to KLOS in SO CA. But, I have a hard time when they insist on playing The Ramones, who I always considered punk. So, I guess it is a personal opinion as well as a decision on how you format a show on the radio. To me Classic Rock is anything Prior to the CD era.
