Can you please tell me how close they are and everything to that effect?

Both met when they were children at the worst and lowest neighborhood of Soul Society. Both of them could use Reatsu or spirit energy on a small way. Since them didn't have parents and only each other, they decided to form a small group of vandals that took care of each other, like stealing food from nearby merchants.
At their teens, Rukia and Renji decide to take the test to be a shinigamis because they could use Reatsu. Rukia excelled in Demon Arts while Renji excelled in combat. Renji having a chance with Rukia because he knew they both will be graduating and be put in the same team and always were together. He is in a rude awakening: his dreams are shattered because she was automatically accepted to a team w/o doing the hard work and now they were more distant because she just now is a Noble person.

they grew up together but then split after rukia was brought into the kuchki house there not lovey close, though i think renji likes ruki lol
