Not especially. You wouldn't be in too terribly much danger driving it, but the high driving position gives you poor up-close visibility. Also, it's designed for off-roading. It's on-road handling will suffer for that. You're not putting yourself in a hell of a lot of danger, but you're putting others at increased risk. This is a vehicle that will not be terribly forgiving of mistakes.
I'd suggest looking elsewhere for your first car. The Solstice would be better in a lot of ways, as would the Charger. (But note, the Solstice has no really usable trunk space. If you want a roadster, get a used S2000, a BMW, or a Miata)
If you really want 4WD...well, Subarus have good AWD, and are popular with folks who live on rugged roads. It wouldn't be a true off-roader but it'll go on any road, they're extremely safe in accidents, and handle very well. A base model Forester, Impreza or Legacy would be an excellent first car.

I own a FJ Cruiser, and I would say no, due to the fact that the visibility is terrible! in the rear, on the sides, everywhere. Not somthing i would pick for my 20 year old son. Not to mention the fact that i have had to have the winshield replaced due to rock damage, relating to the the verticle placement of the windshield and it being prone to this kind of damage. Im having some issues with some of the answers given to this question. The FJ is foreign its a toyota. And looking for somthing with more power and faster is not somthing you want your teen in. No documented wiring problems either.

None of the above is a good starter car for a teenager. Too much size and/or too much performance are recipes for disaster for drivers still in early years of learning. A Corolla, Cobalt, or Focus, or similar type of vehicle, are a lot more suitable.

The FJ cruiser has had a lot of problems with their electrical systems...rare for a toyota but they are the lemon of toyotas. I would look foreign if I were you, but I'm not so do what you like.

Yes the Toyota FJ is a nice car. Toyotas will last a long time (till you are out of college).

Dang, if you can get those cars when your 16 either you found the job of a lifetime or your parents are very nice. I'd go with the Charger. I never even heard of FJ cruiser, only the PT Cruiser.

Teenagers should drive beat-up old cars with 100,000 miles on them, for two reasons:
1. If they crash (and they frequently do), their parents won't have wasted much money.
2. It stops them from acting conceited.
