If you are an uninsured renter, you would be responsible for the damage. This would be a good time to go over your insurance coverage. If you have renter's insurance, your insurance may cover the damage. A general rule in insurance coverage of water damage is: if it comes from the ground, it's not covered (that would be covered only under flood insurance which is a separate policy), if it comes from above, you are covered. Renters insurance is very reasonable and highly recommended.

If you made the mistake out of negligence or extreme ignorance, the burden falls on you. The owner will be required to do the repairs asap, but the owner will probably come after you (lawsuit) for reimbursement of the repair expenses.
On the other hand, if the pipes burst out of normal wear & tear or faulty installation/construction, you may be off the hook.
