Why is it that when we are humming and then we plug our nose, our humming stops? Do people really hum through their nose, or their mouths?

I didn't try it right now, but i've done it before. I was playing a game with my niece the other day where i would hum and she would plug my nose and laugh. It's because in order for the sound to be loud, the air has to pass out the body. Humming expels air through the nose. When you plug the nose, you may hear a small sound in the back of your throat, but not loud. The sounds starts in the voice box and is expelled where the air comes out.

Because when we hum in English in the usual way, it's actually an M sound, which is our mouths closed, voice on, and the airstream coming out our nose.
The M is a nasal consonant, and if you hold your hose while humming an M, you can continue for a couple of seconds, until your mouth fills up with air and cheeks puff out like a balloon, or you have to take a breath.
Try that.

You need the air from your nose to produce the sound. Yes I also tried it!

I think it's because when you close your nose, there are no more openings for the air to come out from.

I just tried it. I can. I think its because I know how to use my hot air. Sorry, that probably didn;t make sense. We actually had a lesson in band in how to use your hot air, because you play better that way.
