Cool Hand Luke.
Hustler (early 60s.. not hippie 60s)
Graduate...
Rosemary's Baby.. (for common housewife look)

West Side Story

Those mostly normal people in the 60s.. if you want hippies... you might want to stick with the woodstock idea and go with real people...

For 70s, if you want normal people, or semi normal.. Things like Taxi driver, Annie Hall, Rocky, or how the teens were can watch origional Halloween for normal kids..
Animal House..

Not everyone was hippie or disco freak.. If you want the disco/hippie try Austin Powers for the outfits of 60s/70s (goldmember for disco)

Saturday Night Fever for travolta disco..

I'll have a go, with the reason I chose each film also listed.

A Hard Day's Night - America's first glimpse of Beatlemania
Blow Up - Swinging London through a dark lens. Great fashion.
Gimme Shelter - The end of the 60's as things started to go wrong. Mick knew how to strut.
El Topo - People did a LOT of drugs back then
The Graduate - The first hint of the culture wars. Preppies turn into hippies.
Dr. Strangelove... - maybe, if the world is ending, all you can do is laugh...
if.... - Why England is broken
2001: A Space Odyssey - Space is bigger than you think
Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid - Mustache Westerns, and the start of manufactured nostalgia
I am curious...yellow - softcore porn that stays in focus
Deep Throat - harcore porn that doesn't have to
Taxi Driver - Times Square in the 70s
Midnight Cowboy - Times Square in the 60s
5 Easy Pieces - Jack's back
The Conversation - a dirty mac
Dog Day Afternoon - more New York grit
Annie Hall - don't sneeze into the cocaine!

That should get you started. I'm sure you can find pretty much any "type" you're looking for somewhere in there. Good luck!

What play are you performing? The reason I ask is, the year it is set is very important. What most people think of as "The Sixties" didn't actually begin until after 1964 - The Beatles brought over the "Mod" look which Twiggy then brought to ladies' fashion, and then of course, in the late 60s, Vietnam brought about the hippie movement, which actually lasted into the early 70s. Anything before 1964 is going to be stylistically more like the Americana-type 1950s image - very Father Knows Best/Leave it to Beaver type stuff.

Then when you get into the 70s, after the war ended, things changed again.

A little more info on what you're looking for would help get you more useful suggestions.

My favorite is Hair, as it addresses several different "character-types".

I suggest you try some movies made in that era, preferably set in the place your play is set.

English movies include the 2 Beatles films, Hard Days Night and Help, The Collector, Georgy Girl.

American ones include American Graffitti (late 50s/early 60s), Bye Bye Birdie, most of the Elvis movies.

None of those answers were right, except for Easy rider and Hair. Forrest Gump? Are you kidding me? That answer wasn't even close. American Graffitti and Grease was late 50"s, Clueless as to what they were referring to when they answered Riding in cars with Boys-Try renting Woodstock-you'll see true to life fashions from the 60's and 70's there-clothing was very free-hippie style. Batiks, madras and paisley-embroidered denims.

Well, different places mean different style in the 60s.

For Example: In New York in the 60's were very Tuxedo-like.

If the place is at a farm, then it would be dirty and a hat.

The way people talk was different. They didn't use as much profanity. There were different countries with different languages and cultures.

Be more specific...........
