SAT are not graded on a pass/no pass basis. You get a score based on the number of questions you have attempted and gotten right on each portion of the exam. The exam consists of math, writing, and critical reading. In order to get into a prestigious college, you need to get very high SAT scores ranging from 2000-2200.
I would vouch for only two book when studying for the SAT exam. The first being the Princeton Review's SAT review book. This book provides students with a list of the one hundred most frequently tested words on the exam. In addition, the book helps students crack questions they are unfamiliar with or do not know the answer to. Overall, this is a very good book.
Second, I would recommend TutorFox.com's SAT guide. For only 10 dollars, this book provides students with more information than some of the 20-30 dollar books from major publishers such as Kaplan, Barrons, etc. The book is written by two college students who have score 2400 and 2350 on the SAT.
I would recommend those two books as study aids.
Good Luck and let me know if you need any more information.

The SAT test is not a pass fail test. The SAT gives you a score from 200 to 800 in three test categories, math, writing and reading.
From your local library, you should sign out an SAT prep book. Learn all of the directions to each test section ahead of time so you will have more time to pass each section. Also read the chapter on test hints, so you will know the tricks that lead to higher scores.
If you are motivated take a prep test for each of the three parts and compute your score from the score guide in the book. Make sure you sign out a book with a score guide.
High schools hand out top grades to many students and this keeps parents very happy. The SAT is a more realistic measure of your abilities. I know of a student that was very close to a 4.0 but scored in the bottom 1% on her college entrance test.
When preparing for the SAT, if you find out that your score is lower than you would like, you can do the study sections of the test prep book.

The SAT test is designed to measure your overall aptitude in mathematics and English. The ACT test measures aptitude in a wider array of subjects.
These tests do not have a grade that separates passing from failing. Instead, each year, testmakers use statistics to determine how your scores compare to the "average" test taker.
Colleges use the SAT and/or ACT tests as one of many criteria in determining acceptance for college enrollment and scholarships. Higher scores will allow you to be accepted at more universities, while lower scores will limit your choices. Some other factors include high school grades, extra-curricular activities, income levels, and even entrance essays.
Many students with poor SAT scores can still get into the school of their choice if they work hard enough. Some choose to attend junior colleges first and then transfer after two years if they are not accepted as a high school graduate.
The most important thing to consider is that you must decide what school is "good" for you. Just because someone else thinks they know what schools are "good" or not, does not mean these schools are for you. Do plenty of research into what schools offers in academics, student life, location, reputation, and admissions requirements. Make a list of your requirements (things that are important to you) and find schools that fit those requirements. Take your SAT and ACT tests and await your results. Then apply to your top schools. Early and thorough applications (and essays) can overcome poor test scores.

The SAT is required for most colleges. Some colleges will accept ACT scores in lieu of, but not many.
Sorry...but the SAT is the standard for reputable institutions of higher learning.
If you did not score well on the SAT t here is still an option. Do your core classes (first two years) at a community college then transfer. You do not have to take the SAT at all in this case. Your scores at the community college will prove to the admissions officer that you are capable of doing college level work - that is provided you score well in your classes.
Good luck

Just so you know, you cannot "pass" or "fail" the SAT. The score you can get ranges from 400 to 1600, and colleges will look at it to get a general idea of your capabilities.
Each college has its own range of scores that it likes to see. For example, Harvard may only like scores of 1400 and up, while a community college might accept anybody with a 900.
SATs are important, but remember, there are other aspects of your application that are just as important, some even more.
Good luck!

You can not pass or fail the SATs. The new SAT has three sections: Critical Reading, Math, and Writing. You can get up to an 800 in each section so the highest possible total score is a 2400. You can go on www.collegeboard.com to get more specific information on the SATs. Also, all colleges have different average SAT scores that they are looking for in prospective students so go on websites like collegeboard.com or princetonreview.com to look for average scores for specific universities.

It is not a pass or fail test. It is about getting a high enough score to qualify for a major university. No reptuable school well let you in if your ACTs or SATs are too low.
