I think it could be god for the Oilers. Penner scored 29 goals in his second NHL seas which is not bad. Hopefully he can do the same next year. Maybe a bit pricey though. $4.25 million a season for 5 years. What are your thoughts

By the way to those who say he is overpaid alot- He is overpaid a little maybe but this guy scored 29 goals on his second season! He is 6 foot 4! He is a power forward like Joe Thornton or the old Todd Bertuzzi. And how else are we supposed to improve our team, by going after small time players in UFA? Remember we had Nylander but he screwed us so don't blame us for going after restricted free agents.

oilersrock, ur thoughts are good just the facts are wrong. Ducks are at aroung 48 mil and if neidermayer stays in anaheim and doesnt retire they dont need to sign him.He still has years on his contract. Teemu is unrestricted and i think he will retire though.

I am a bit hesitant about the prospect of paying Penner that much, especally since if the worst happens, he is another Lupul.
True Burke said that he would match any offer, but he could have been bluffing. He needs to be worried about his two RFA's for next year, Perry and Getzlaf. They will both command upwards to 5 million dollars and if he matches this, he will lose one of them. Also if he matches he will lose both Selanne and Neidermeyer. The Ducks have about 9 million dollars in cap space right now. Neidermeyer will get 6-7 million if he resigns. Selanne will get at least 5 million.
Burke was caught with his pants own and no matter what he does now he will lose a good player or two. In the next week he must decide who he wants to keep and who he wants to lose.
Lowe on the other hand is a genius. Burke gave Lowe a crappy deal for Pronger and Lowe is getting back. No matter what anyone says about Lowe he is playing by the rules set by this CBA. Sabres and Ducks fans can cry all they want, but Lowe is doing everything he can do to improve his team and I would expect no less from any other GM in the league.

Kevin Lowe is making some serious enemies. First Vanek, now Penner? He is seriously overpaying, and they are going to get Penner. The only way I see the Ducks matching that offer from the Oilers is if Scotty Niedermeyer or Teemu Selanne is retiring, or they move someone. This is going to be interesting when Ryan Getzlaf and Corey Perry come looking for new contracts and Dustin Penner gets 4.3 mill a season, the Ducks will have a tough time signing them too. Kevin Lowe set the bar pretty high.

I think in getting 3 picks for Penner would be a great deal for the Ducks, considering how low the Oilers are predicted to finish in the comming seasons. It might be good for the Oilers as well since they have a deep prospect pool.
That said, Burke will match. He has said all along he will. He hates the idea of signing RFA as they inflate the market, which is something is has said for years. Finally, when Clarke tried it on Nonis for Ryan Kesler Burke urged him to match. Burke will have to be trading some assets in the meantime, which he didn't want to do, probably enough to compensate for a possible returning of Scott Niedermayer. But he will match on principle.
Plus, if Regier would match for Vanek when they could have 4 first rounders (high picks as well) then the Ducks certainly will.

As an Oilers fan I would love to see Penner play for the Oil. Is he worth that much cash? Of course not, but then again I don't think any hockey player should be getting over a million dollars a season but I don't get to set the salaries do I?
The Ducks would be stupid not to match because Penner is a real solid player and he is no Lupul...

Unbelievable, the Oilers offer another ridiculous salary that is going to raise salaries that will price most small market teams out of contention again in the next 2-4 years from now. I respect Lowe's determination to improve his team, but he has lost sight of the big picture. He is inflating the values of all the players to levels that the league cannot sustain as whole. Only the large market teams will be able to afford these players.
Penner will go to the Oilers, but with the current salary raises, Getzlaf and Perry may be too expensive to keep both next year even if Penner leaves.

penner isn't worth what the oilers are offering for his services,if i was burke i'd let him go and get the compensation picks in return ( i believe penner is a restriced fa) *edit* penner looked his best in the first playoff season when he helped anaheim over the avs after that he looked rather normal

I think the Ducks will match it.
Brian Burke already said that he would match any offer made on Penner earlier this month.

I think the Ducks will match it! They will go over the salary cap slightly, but the NHL has allowed the teams to go over by 10%.

If Ducks match they will have to move some bodies. They don't have that much cap room. especially if Neidermeyer stays and they resign Teemu.
