If suicide were legal, people who are desparate would take out huge insurance policies, bump themselves off, and leave their family well off. It's about money as far as the law goes. Most of our laws have a basis in morality, or at least they attempt to create them in that way, and most people don't believe in suicide .From a spiritual view point, God says man does not have the right to take a life. God gives life and He decides when you need to go.
As for euthnasia, or assisted suicide, I can see where people may consider it "mercy killing", but again man does not have the legal or moral right to take a life.

I don't know the historical aspect of the legality of suicide but I'm assuming that certain people might take this into consideration and it may cause them to seek help (medical or professional) that would allieviate the problems that brought them to the point of suicide. I've never heard of a person being jailed for failing to commit suicide- hospitalized but not jailed.

It's illegal because our lawmakers believe that suicide is a shortsighted solution of an individual who is in crisis and mentally ill. Of course, they do make assumptions...it's considered heroic if an active grenade is tossed into a room full of people and one person jumps on it to save the others from harm:)

I don't understand why suicide is illegal either. If one suceeds, who are they going to arrest. I think the laws are more for public safety. IF someone decides to jumps off a bridge, that will cause traffic back-ups. Then the city has to send out boats and divers, potentially harming the rescue workers.

Well if you're trying to kill yourself it is "harm against man" and that's illegal. But most of the people who try to commit suicide don't go directly to jail, they go to the hospital, then they go to either a mental hospital or rehab. If they go to jail, they were probably high on something and got caught with it.

Wth suicide isn't illegal. If you attempt it they will take you to therapy not jail. That's just dumb. They're defiantly going to kill themselves if they have to go to jail. Where did you get this information? LMAO imagine a dead body going to court and the judge sentencing it 20 years in prison.

Because some people did bad things and don't want to go to jail. Instead they want to kill themselves and the government likes them to suffer by going to jail.

it is illegal because it is a mores in society...
religiously, it is shunned in Christianity...
No matter what someone does, I doubt I could agree with allowing people to commit suicide. It is unethical, to say the least. Remember, Dr. Kavorkian?

Same with teenage runaways. A friend of mine runaway from home because he was being abused. He went to jail for 4 months for running away and they didn't believe that he was being abused.

I have always wondered why also. But my guess is because of our flawed system, which is based on religion. It is considered a sin to commit suicide.
