The rod on my toilet (the one that goes from the handle to the chain) just broke. How do I replace it? How do I disconnect the broken rod from the handle?

You have to replace the whole handle. These handle are readly available at your local Lowe's or Home Depot. You unscrew that nut behind the handle(inside the tank). I think that it has reversed threads on it. Remove the chain to the flapper and pull out the old handle. Install the new handle unit, reattach the chain to the flapper. Your crapper should be good as new. Hope this helps. dp

Open the lid and check which part / parts have broke. It sounds like it's the piece of wire that connects the handle to the ballcock (had to put one word here as Yahoo automatically changes the word co*k to **** LOL) system. If that's the case, you will find a hexagonal nut connected to the handle. If it's just the connecting wire, leave the handle connected and remove the broken wire. Show the wire to an assistant at a hardware store and they will sell you a new one. The wire connects to the back of the handle and to a part on the ballcock arm. You can see where it connects as it looks similar to a valve but has a nut and threads on it. Connect the wire and then slightly adjust the nut on the ballcock end. This will rebalance the ballcock. Flush the toilet a couple of times then go outside and check your overflow pipe. If the pipe has water running from it, return to the toilet and adjust the nut in the opposite direction. One direction will allow the ball to rise higher before stopping the mains water from entering the system and the other allows it to rise less. If the handle has any defect, undo the hexagonal nut and remove the handle. When you purchase a new handle, it may be worth buying a new ballcock and wire as well as once one part starts coroding, you can almost guarantee other parts will soon follow. You should find some diagrams on DIY sites to help you but if you can avoid it, don't call a plumber as you will probably end up paying a couple of hundred pounds for an unneeded total system when it will probably only cost a few pounds to fix it yourself. Try a web search for "how to repair a toilet cystern diagram".

Any home improvement or hardwhere store will have just the parts you need pluss many of the employees there have the knoledge to get you headed in the right direction. Don't be afraid to ask. Remember in life, some are doctors and some are lawers.

go to the hardware store or Home Depot and ask. The salesperson will show you what you need, and there you can ask how to replace it. It may be attached to something else you would need also. While you're at the store determine if you have all the items (like pliers) that you might need.
