Does installing and using a trailer hitch for occasional use, moving furniture, cause undo wear and tear on the engine and transmission? I say," no, it doesn't, because of the commercial core."

If it's a 3/4 ton, then it was built for heavy duty use. It has a heavier frame, bigger brakes and towing is no problem. A GM (GMC or Chevy) truck dealer should be able to tell you the limits. These will be based on the engine your van has. But, if it's just some furniture...no problem.

Installing just a trailer hitch? No it doesn't. Towing. Yes that does cause increased wear. It generates increased heat which causes more wear on transmission and engine components. But only if your towing a medium load or higher. If you're only towing around a 300 pound couch on a light trailer its not gonna cause any noticable wear if any at all.

Not sure what a 'commercial core' is...but occasional towing of light loads will not harm it. After all a truck is made to haul stuff.

Heavy loads are a different thing...
