Fungus is one of the potential fish diseases that can hang around in a tank for ages and never hurt a fish, but once a fish gets weakened by something else, it shows up. Some fungi that can cause fish problems are common even in the air, so there is no keeping all of them out.. Either the fish already had the fungus, or it's weakened, or it was unjured during transportation. Once of those is the answer, but it's impossible to know for sure which one.

I agree with everything magicman said. I'll elaborate a bit further. When he said weakened, he meant that the fish could be weakened from injury or it could be from poor water conditions. When you don't use a siphon to clean your tank, and when you go for months, topping off the water but no siphoning, the water in the tank goes bad. You should test your water for ammonia, nitrite, and nitrate. You can buy your own kit or take a water sample to a fish store. If any of these levels are high, it means that either your tank is not completely cycled or that you are not doing enough water changes to handle the amount of food and fish you have.

well plant spores in the air can cause and its bound to happen that ur fish will have fungus again i think its handy to keep an employee reccomened fungus killer for your fish next to the tank or in the same room just in case
