can you breed a male and female betta that are parent and child or sibling bettas with no problems of defects??

Yes and no. You can do it and it is done very often to "fix" desirable traits such as tail type or color. Here's the thing... while you are fixing the good traits, you are also fixing bad traits. So yes, do it to get the traits you want, but occasionally bring a new fish from a different line into the mix. That will keep your line stronger and healthier. I make sure to add a new fish to my line every 4 generations.

Yes, this process is called "line breeding" and is being used by breeders to maintain a particlar desirable trait in the fish. The procedure is a little more complicated and need accurate record if you are to produce quality specimens.

Yes. This was how the original fancy bettas and guppies etc were produced.Siblings were selected for colour, long finnage etc., and bred together over a long period.
