I am being transferred soon to the East Coast. I would be working in Morris Plains, NJ and would like to live in Eastern PA. My main focus is a very low crime city for my wife and small children to feel safe as I travel alot. I saw that Emmaus, PA was on the best cities list, which would be an hour away. Are there any other cities near that area you would suggest I look at? My ideal home price would be roughly 245K - 415K so I would like moderately upscale. Any help would be appreciated!

Emmaus is a nice town. There are plenty of nice small towns in the Allentown area. Allentown is a convenient place along Interstate 78. The commute along Interstate 78 and 278 is a pleasant commute and would probably take you just a little over an hour, depending on traffic and how fast you drive.

The advantage of living in Pennsylvania is that you can buy more house for your money, and taxes, both real estate and income taxes, are much lower.

Be sure to evaluate your commute. If you're thinking of Emmaeus, it looks like you're planning on I-78. Also look at communities on the I-80 corridor (eg East Stroudsburg)

In New Jersey itself, prices are higher, but the schools can be considerably better, and the commute shorter.

With real estate in a bit of a funk, you might just get yourself a good deal in a community closer-in. Generally, the Princeton area is extremely attractive (excellent schools, terrific address) as is the Madison-Hopatcong-Lebanon area. Your commute from either of these places would be much shorter. . . but affordability is an issue.

Northern New Jersey, up near the border with New York State, is another possibility, less expensive, shorter commute.

Buy in Emmaus. It is like a Rockwell portrait. The prices you are looking at will buy you some of the nicer homes in the city.

Newtown and Yardley (on the pricier side) or Fairless Hills (a little more reasonable) are all in Pennsbury School District, which is a pretty good district. There are some great neighborhoods in that area. Good luck! :)

If you move to NJ, move to Englewood.
