I really am unclear of this saying but I say it all the time and I think I use it in the correct context please help me.

Originally, this phrase meant that a person could not know the answer because they were not the sort of person who should know the answer to that particular type of question. It refers to the fact that if that person did know the answer, they would be going to hell, because in order to know the answer, they would have had to perform some inappropriate acts.

Now, people use this phrase to mean "you've got to be crazy if you think I know the answer to that question" and it has nothing to do with whether or not they feel they are going to go to hell as a result or not.

Saying thank you is kind of odd, too. Like you are saying...think about it. I dunno...and "Beats me" does it mean you want a beating? I am confused now! To hell if I know means that if you do know, you'll go to hell. SO STOP SAYING THAT! Just to be safe...
