you have to tie the wires into the rear brake lights and turn signals but if you do the job correctly and solder the connections and tape them with electrical tape you will be fine.

A hitch attaches to the vehicles frame and does not mess with the electrical. The wiring for towing is tapped into the vehicles electrical system. Newer model cars are equipped with a plug in the rear for a "tow package" and it does not hurt the electrical system. On older vehicles you can splice into the tail lights and wire in a plug. This will not hurt it either.

You can buy adapters that plug in between the connectors from the main wiring harness to your tail lights and turn signals. These will not affect your original wiring. The other way is to splice each connection using scotchlok connectors, and that could affect your wiring.

Usually a harness is installed which plugs directly into part of the factory wiring. These are designed to work properly with the factory wiring and should cause no problem other than extra load on the flasher relay which is meant to be replaced periodically anyway.

If done PROPERLY no damage will occur.

Have a professional do it if you don't know how to do it but it usually just involves unplugging one wire connector and plugging in the new wire harness.
