I stink at math.
I need to know the formula that would answer this question:
$560 is 87.5% of what?
When I look up percentages on line I find "what is % of __this number__. That's not the problem I have.

formula tip:
(N) is (M)% of what
what = (N * 100)/M
what = (first number * 100) / second number
($560) is (87.5) % of what?
what = (560*100) / 87.5 = 640

I have always used this:
is/of=%/100. You will be given 3 of the 4 parameters. You replace the unknown one with x.
So, for this problem: is=$560, x=of, 87.5=%, and 100=100.
So, 560/x=87.5/100. Now, cross multiply. 560*100=87.5*x. Solve for x. 56000/87.5=x. x=640.

If a is p% of x, then:
x = 100 * a / p.
If $560 is 87.5% of x, then:
x = 100 * $560 / 87.5 = $640.

Look at it this way:
Let the number be $x, so
87.5% of $x = 560, so
1% of $x = 560/87.5, so
100% of $x = 560/87.5 x100
so x = $640

You can swap sides any time you want, so
(87.5/100)*x = $560
You can do anything you want (except divide by 0) to one side AS LONG AS you do the same thing to the other side:
100*(87.5/100)*x = 100*$560
(87.5)*x = $56,000
(87.5)*x/87.5 = $56,000/87.5
x = $640

to get a percentage U take a number devided by another times 100.
Example $5 is what percent of $16?
5 / 16 *100= 31.25%
Now to work backwards I ask U $5 is 31.25% of how much ?U should get $16 like this:
5/ 0.3125= 16
so in your case take $560 devide by the decimal equivelant of 87.5% or 0.875 to get
$ 560 / 0.875= $ 640
to convert % to decimal take the given % and throw away the % sign and move the decimal to the LEFT 2 places then use it to devide.
Ex 45.3% = 0.453 3.07%= 0.0307 63%= 0.63
90.83%= 0.9083 and 1000%= 10.00 etc...
