Just like all aras there is something for everyone. In alpha order here you are...
Boston Edison
Corktown
Indian Village
Palmer Woods
Rosedale Park
University District
Warrendale
Depends on your preference. Check out http://www.visitdetroit.com for links to the historical areas. Some of these areas are more prestigious than others but all have a sense of community that is unparalleled throughout SE MI.
UPDATE: I forgot Sherwood but Belle Isle is not run down. Belle Isle is larger than Central Park too. The team got it right there second go round! Belle Isle has had more face lifts than Joan Rivers :-) and this most recent one is one of the best! Go check it out for yourself--http://www.ci.detroit.mi.us/recreation/centers/M/belle_isle/belleM.htm
Riverplace condos are nice but the Riverfront Condos are closer to the water IMO and have better views of the Belle Isle and Ambassador Bridges which look aweosme at night!
I hope this helps!

Greektown has good restaurants and nightlife.
The new Compuware/Campus Martius center on Woodward Avenue is nice.
Indian Village, Palmer Woods and Palmer Park are beautiful old neighborhoods with beautiful (and beautifully maintained) houses.
The River Place condos on the east side on the Detroit River are very nice conversions of old brewery and pharma factory buildings, but aren't that much of a neighborhood (though the brew pub and the Rattlesnake Club there are great.
The Wayne State University campus is nice, similar to any other urban college campus.
Belle Isle was designed by the same team as Central Park in NYC and is a beautiful setting, though it is quite run-down these days and many of the old institutions there have closed in past 10 years.
Eastern Market is fantastic on the weekends, with vendors selling plants, fruit, vegs, meat, etc.

In addition to Palmer woods, Palmer Park, Sherwood and Indian Village, Rosedale Park is also nice. North Rosedale Park is the best. My mother lives there and it's a very quiet comunittee and the lawns are very well kept. The Riverfront is nice as well. Riverfront apartments.

DETROIT, yes the actual city of Detroit does have nice areas. Indian Village, Palmer Woods, Sherwood Forrest, University District are all nice. You don't have to move to the suburbs to have a nice home in Michigan.

I've traveled there a few times, and as much as I hate to summarily dismiss any town, it's not the nicest city overall, due to a lot of economic problems. Warren isn't too bad, with a fair amount of music and happenings. Also, if you've got your passport current, you can always hop the river and go into Toronto, which is pretty cool.

Sure there are a few, for the most part, no. Parts of downtown are nice, and the suburbs are much better than the inner city.
