You ALL said America is the land of opportunity and anyone can succeed.

Why don't liberals ENCOURAGE those on generational welfare to TRY to succeed instead of giving them handouts their whole lives. Look at the Katrina mess. Those people did not work before Katrina hit and did not know what to do when forced to do things on their own. They were basically paralyzed by fear of having to rely on themselves and not the Government.

There is a place in Kentucky called Magnatown / Canadatown where a rich Canadian man is letting the Katrina victims live for 5 years for free if they get jobs or go to school. Most of these people had never worked before and this man gives them rules in order to stay there. Some just won't work or follow the rules and are kicked out. They get 5 years of no rent and then they MUST become self-sufficient. I applaud his efforts. There is needed help - AND a FINITE goal for them to achieve.

It is all about control. The more people dependant on the government, the more powerful that government becomes. If people depend on the government then they will support political candidates that promise to give them more and more benefits.

As you can see from some of these answers, there is a great misconception about what makes people poor or even what the definition of "poverty" is in America.

It is all about the decisions people make. In America, the land of opportunity, it is literally impossible to be poor if you make good decisions. It is also quite possible for even the richest people to become poor if they make the wrong decisions.

Welfare should only be temporary. It should be a safety net not a hammock. If people insist upon having babies that they cannot support they should be charged with child abuse. There is no way to be homeless unless you choose homelessness.

Case in point: Years ago, in New York, if a woman with children on welfare did not like the apartment she was being provided with, the waiting list for another apartment was several years. However, if she and her kids were homeless, they would be put up in a nice hotel and given first priority in getting an apartment. What do you think happened?

There was a rash of fires in public housing apartments. These women were burning there own apartments so that they would be put up in new accomodations. This is not just anecdotal check the news stories.

When people on welfare were forced to show up every day at a particular time for job training so that they could be placed in a job, it had a very positive effect. No longer able to stay home and sleep late, these people soon learned that they could do far better working than hanging around the job center all day. So they got jobs.

The most amazing part of this story is, once they got jobs they began to look down on those still on welfare. It was these newly assimilated workers who know for a fact that many welfare recipiants are slackers. They know how the game works.

Uh, I did NOT say that America is the land of opportunity, nor did I say that anyone can succeed.

By definition, it's simply not possible for EVERYONE to succeed, as there aren't enough jobs, let alone enough slots for success.

As for Katrina victims; many of those people DID have jobs before Katrina.

But, having lost their homes, and been stuck in trailer parks where there was no work, there wasn't a lot they could do.

Then, by giving no-bid contracts to known thieves who everyone knew wouldn't even attempt to rebuild -- instead of providing money for local businesses to hire locally, which would have enabled people to put their city and their lives back together -- Bush guaranteed that none of those people will ever have any chance to have decent lives.

Whoever told you they were "paralyzed by fear of having to rely on themselves" was lying to you.

They physically and financially weren't able to leave the city (if you don't have a car, there's nothing you can do to get away).

One of the things we pay taxes for is to help people make it through natural disasters.

The Bush administration complete failed at this, at every step of the process.

That's because he simply doesn't care about the lives or well-being of anyone who isn't a personal friend.

Human beings have something that's called compassion, and are far-sighted enough to be capable of imagining times they might need help, too.

Thus, human beings believe in helping others through natural disasters.

Your assumption is not correct.

Everyone has the OPPORTUNITY to succeed here, not everyone can succeed.

That being said, there is a minimum level that we should teach people to get to and cut the apron strings. In this country the way we structure things, we TRY to minimize the freeloading.

Incidently, lots of freeloading comes from the not so lazy. Look at the industries and corporations that we give subsidies to or shelter from certain market forces. That's freeloading as well.

I don't know what you were talking about. AFDC (the program commonly known as welfare) was abolished 10 years ago by Bill Clinton. And even before it was abolished it did not allow people simply to receive handouts their whole lives. These programs have always had provisions encouraging or requiring recipients to find work. But when I try to think of a lazy person who has received handouts all his life, the first person who comes to mind is George W. Bush.

wow that's dumb....You know encouraging somebody to goto SCHOOL is encouraging them to succeed...

I love how republicans call people on welfare lazy....but then refuse to support programs that would help them get better jobs that pay a decent wage.

And nobody in this country makes it on their own EVER. Any time you get a small business tax break or a student loan or a parking ticket thrown out because you can't afford to pay it...it's a form of welfare. Would you be able to do what you do if the government didn't build things like roads or collect your trash???

You are wrong about that RLP. There are millions of Americans that cannot succeed. There are millions that cannot make it through college. That doesn't make these people lazy. Many work 60 hours a week and live at the poverty level . How is that a success story.

The number that you call "lazy" is a very small percentage of people that need help.

not only that, those that you do refer to as "lazy" are not Liberals. They are not political at all. You may as well label them as Republicans if you seem to feel the need to give them a label.

Same old sh*t different day I see.

Man you must have fun preaching from your high stilettos.

Would you rather the alternative that they turn to crime and shoot your head off trying to rob you? I'm sure they would have a lot of fun the minute they laid eyes on YOU.

Remember darling...but for the grace of God...you could find yourself being a nice little old bag lady yourself someday. In fact, I believe what goes around comes around and you'd better hope no one shoves you in a nursing home in that ripe old age of yours.

What did you expect all those po' old black...'people'...to do...save themselves? Rebuild thier city with mud and rotting bodies? They were left to rot as far as your "loving government" was concerned. The rest of the world is disgusted and still you pompous fools go around being legends in your own mind.

You want to encourage people it takes MONEY to help them and compassion and education...something I venture would be like squeezing blood from a stone if people had to rely on someone like you who was born with a silver spoon shoved in both ends.

PS re: additional details...it took a Canadian however did it not? No doubt there are lazies..there always will be...but ignoring the problem won't make it go away, just exacerbate it.

Of course you know that generational welfare is basically an urban legend. The vast majority of those receiving public assistance get it for only a short period, during a time of great need, and, once they are able to take care of themselves again, never go back on. These are facts, which, while you can ignore them, you cannot fairly deny them. There are those who abuse the system, but they are isolated exceptions, not the rule. I know that truth doesn't help your arguments, but it would be nice if you could use it from time to time.

i undertsand some of your points but not nessaraily the views about katrina.some people need help for them to survive because on what little they make there families would stave without some kind of help.my proplem is,half of the people i know that need help cant even get it,,if they would raise the min wage to a decent amount you wouldnt see all those people needing help, but with the high gas prices, oil groceries etc your going to continue to see people in dire need of help..i admit there are some that abuse the system but i assure you theres more out there hurting because they cant get help..someone only making $10 hr can hardly take care of 4 people .most less making less than that.i agree with others.look at the government and ask them why we have people over here starving and going without?

Excuse me, but I thought you were a Christian? Since when was Christ against the poor and since when was he a racist? You need to go back and re-read how Christ lived his life. Many of those people worked before Katrina hit. They may have not been rich or lived up to your high nosed standards but many of them worked and now have nothing. Have you been to N.O? I doubt it. There were alot of working poor in that city and now you're saying that because they don't live up to your uptight white standards they are not worth fighting for or worth helping. Funny thing is that the people getting the most help in that region are white and wealthy. And, I'm not talking about their insurance companies helping them, because many of the insurance companies are not helping their clients in that region. I'm talking about the government money going to them because they are rich and white. You need to research the information because YOU are the one that is lazy when it comes to critical thinking and looking up the facts.

What's wrong with helping people when they need it? BTW, corporate welfare sucks up over $280 billion a year from our taxes. Welfare takes up less than $70 billion. I'm not talking about medicare or medicaid or social security. I'm talking about the welfare checks dear. Who's taking up more of your precious tax dollars? That's right, it's the rich corporate and their greed. Corporations that are as bad as Enron.
BTW, why do you always stick up for the rich and the greedy over the poor and needy and then call yourself a Christian?

It's called Canadaville and could you please post a link or article where they have actually kicked some people out.
The project actually offers alot more than what they got before Katrina hit. But what they have now is no different than alot of middle class communities have and middle class schools offer their children. They didn't get these living in poor neighborhoods because our country punishes the poor. And if you're poor and of color, the country punishes you even more.
