some people allow messages and IM but most don't.

Anyone can send me messages and it's actually not a problem. In fact, the worst I usually get is someone trying to hit on me. The reason I think I don't have a problem like some other people on here is that I'm not hateful in my responses. You can always block someone from contacting you if you don't like what they have to say.

Maybe if people are getting hate mail on here constantly they should re-evaluate the way they interact with others.

Just a thought.

I believe it's a privacy issue. I allow people to email me, but I don't have an IM account at the present time. Some people don't want to be bothered, or don't have the time to spend. Others prefer to keep the communication anonymous, and just on this site. I suppose there are many reasons, but that's a few. People should not take it personally, as after all, we do devote a reasonable amount of time answering questions on Yahoo Answers.

Too many people get offended by some of the answers people give and send irate messages tot he person giving the answer.
A good example was an answer I gave on abortion that resulted in pro-life people sending me mail accusing me of enslaving and abusing women, and mail from the right to life people accusing me of being a god less communist.
After that, I stopped accepting mail.

I don't like the "dirty" messages I get from pervy guys. Oh yeah...it happens all the time. But I still allow emails because most people have good intentions. I don't allow IM because I don't use it.

I did allow messages at one time but, you wouldn't believe what I got. And, when I didn't answer like some wanted, the hate mail was uncalled for. I took it off and it took several weeks for people to forget my address.

It's a lot of hassle. I get many personal messages about things, I can definitely see why some wouldn't want that.

But, I have enough time to respond to them, so I'm fine with it. Really helps with the boredom at work.

A lot of people just don't want to get too involved with people they meet on the Internet. You never really know who you're talking to.

I think alot of people just want to remain "Anonymous". They're really not here or interested in striking up a relationship. This really isn't a social "chat room".
