You don't need to purchase tickets online. However, if you are a member of the Road Rewards loyalty program or want to take advantage of online specials or advance purchase fares, you will need to buy through the site.
You can walk in the day you want to travel and buy your tickets, and it'll still be inexpensive. It's important to remember that Greyhound doesn't have a reservation system like the airlines do and seating is first come, first serve. Get to the terminal no later than an hour before departure and get in line at the gate as soon as you can.
However, if there are more passengers than seats and they have the resources, they'll bring in extra buses to handle the high volume. But that's only if they have the resources. Sometimes during the really busy times, such as around the holidays, equipment and drivers can be a little tight.
The San Diego-LA route is now operated by Greyhound's subsidiary, Crucero. Their buses have more legroom and on-board video entertainment. It's still out of the Greyhound terminals, though.

I highly suggest you avoid Greyhound at ALL COSTS
as their service is the pits
the following instances have happen to me or a friend
all involving greyhound
one day at a station the regular runs comes though
packed to gills (Greyhound dispatchers says there will
be another shortly (mind yo this at 10Pm -10:30pm no bus
11:00pm no bus 12:00[- sorry this station is now closed
all passengers must go outside to wait for a bus
12:30 no bus 1:00am hey a bus but its not
operated by Greyhound and the driver doesnt speak
English nor does he know how to get to Seattle
another time 200 passengers wait for bus (that only holds 50-60 people from Phoenix
to Los Angeles (they are told there will be another
bus :shortly ( they really mean the NEXT DAY!
if you are lucky to get on a bus you probably would
have to stand for hours on end.
also did you know the LA depot is right in the middle
of skid row, several passages have gotten mugged there.
and security said they cant help them ...since the murggers
were not greyhound passengers!
other incidents a few bus have caught fire,,
or they broke down on the freeway and you are told
you have to walk to the station .
I suggest you take Amtrak instead from San Diego
(you can move around more, and you cant beat the scenery
from the train!

You can buy them the day of travel. However, there's lots of stops and the seats aren't too comfy. May I suggest Amtrak? I know the price is a little more, but you'll be much more comfortable. They have a snack cart and less stops. You can buy the tickets on the day of travel for Amtrak as well. I know their number is 1-800-USA-RAIL. I've done both and the bus seemed horrible. I usually got stuck in traffic, no matter when I left. Orange County and LA sucks for traffic. The train is much smoother. Plus it's easier to walk around.

Of all the choices for travel between San Diego and LA I would not recommend using Greyhound. That route is sub contracted to a Mexican carrier called Crucero and has poor service. A better option would be to use either the Coaster & Metrolink commuter rail systems which provides low cost & fast service along that corridor with one connection required in Oceanside. Amtrak also has frequent direct rail service between SD & LA Trust me, any option is better than Greyhound. Another note both rail systems drop in LA at Union Station while Greyhound stops in the worst section of skid row LA. Best of luck!

you can almost always buy them the day of travel. If oyu're travelling at a particularly busy time, like around Christmas, you may want to book ahead.
