Physically or just clearing 'junk'? There is no need to physically clean the hard drive, as it is always clean and nothing can touch it, and, you would harm it doing it so. To clean 'junk' off your computer, you can run disk clean up, >Start>Programs>Accessories>System Tools>Disk Cleanup. Then defragment it, by going in to the same folder, and click Disk defragmenter and run it. If you have Linux, there is no need to do this, as it automatically defragments your computer. Get a Cleaning Program such as McAfee QuickClean (in stores, CD), which will dramatically clean your computer and increase speed. Deleting Temporary Internet Files with the extenstion ".tmp" will clean most internet data that hogs up space, as well as web cookies, and other files. WARNING! Do not delete files unless you know exactly what they are and know that they aren't of any use. Windows XP automatically backs up these files, but you still need to be careful. And remember, you need to do this at least weekly to achieve maximum benefits.
Hope this helps,
Logix Master

I think you mean to get rid of unneeded files, right?
OK, Go to Control Panel, click on uninstall programs, click on (highlight) the program you want to delete. Click on "uninstall" or "remove program" at the top of the page.
This method is best because it removes files that were placed elsewhere than just in the archive, such as the registry. You will get a clean deletion this way.
When you're done removing all the unwanted programs, do a "defrag" of the HDD. Your comp will run smoothly.

Go to the control panel and run add/remove program. Remove whatever you no longer use. If you use Internet Explorer I would delete the temporary files. Go to Tools and then Internet Options then Delete files.
I would also Defrag your Hard drive. Open My Computer and on the C: drive right click and choose properties, then tools and Defrag.

transfer all the data files you want to keep to another pc or to cd
get your recovery disc from the pc maker and the device driver disc from the pc maker
insert the recovery disc and do a recovery; everything will be removed and wiped clean and the system will be restored to like new condition; reinstall all device drivers; install all software you want on the pc; update Windows to current updates; recreate all user accounts; transfer back all the data files

Click on the Start button. Scroll up to accessories, then over to something roughly labeled for maintenance. Off of that, you should see a link to a disc cleaner.
