This is going to sound horrible and evil and stuff, but I am dying to know. Before you ask, I do not, nor ever will, own livestock-type animals.
Here is my question: Is it illegal if someone outside of a farm buys a live animal and kills it for food? For example, if you buy a live chicken and kill it, is this animal abuse? Like I said before, I AM NOT PLANNING TO DO THIS. I DO NOT, AND NEVER WILL, OWN LIVESTOCK. I am just curious to how the law for this works.

It depends on where you are, but I'm pretty sure that it's legal to catch or buy and kill an animal for food, as long as you're not selling the meat or the hide for profit, because then a whole host of slaughtering and food safety rules go into effect.

As long as you are not abusing the animal or using it for cruel training methods is legal. If you do it properly, and have the intention of eating the animal all is good. However; this sort of thing can not be done inside city limits, and if not done properly could/will cause serious illness or even death. I would not recommend doing or promoting anyone to do this unless well experienced. Also, every state/country has different laws so you should check with your local government.

There are rules and regulations affecting the slaughter and/or mutilation of animals. First, possession of "exotic animals" is usually prohibited within city limits-- i.e., you couldn't buy a cow to slaughter in your backyard and keep it there. Second, animal abuse is usually defined as inflicting undue pain or harm to an animal. Killing it it in an accepted humane way is not illegal (otherwise, millions of hunters would be prosecuted for animal cruelty every year!)
Remember that there ARE animals purchased live that are killed for food at home already -- look at lobsters and crabs! Just because they don't have a four-chambered heart doesn't mean they're not animals. And people kill them at home all the time.
So your answer is yes and no.

No. It's not against the law to buy a chicken, kill it and eat it. However, most people whom kill chickens own their own chickens for eating. My parents buy a calf, raise it up on a friend's land, kill it and we all have some great steaks, roasts and MAN are them ribs ever to die for! You don't know what you're missing! It's great and you don't have to worry about the nasty hormones they feed the animals with store bought meat.

No. You can go to livestock auctions all over the country and buy an animal and bring it home and kill it and eat it.

In most states it is not illegal with regard to certain animals, such as chickens. I imagine there may be some prohibitions on larger animal slaughters because of the health risk.

Farmers kill live chickens and eat them. City folks go to the supermarket and buy plucked, dead chickens and eat them. In both cases, the chickens were alive before they were prepared for dinner.

No it's not illegal, it is only illegal to do your own slathering and sell the product{s} to the general public without being government inspected for health and safety reasons.

It depends do you kill it for food or just senselessly.
