The only way he would get 4500 hits is if he continues his pace of 220-230 hits per year for 14 more years. Considering the fact that he is 34 years old, I really doubt he will play until he is 48, and even if he were to do so, I seriously doubt he would still be getting that many hits in a season. I think a more realistic number would be just about 3000, provided he stays healthy. If he had started playing here when he was 20 or so, maybe he would have gotten to 4000, maybe more, but he lost too much time to make it up.

If he plays til he's 40 and maintains his current pace (both very reasonable assumptions) he should end up with between 3150 and 3200 MLB base hits. Not sure how many hits he had in Japan, but I'd guess for his career he'll end up close to 4500.

I agree with the guy a couple before me, I'd say closer 2,500. He is 33 or 34 I think and if he averages 200 hits for the rest of his career I don't think he would even get to 3000. Too bad he played in Japan for so many years

I'd say there's little to no chance of 4,500. Somewhere around 3,000 seems more approachable. We have to remember that Ichiro started his MLB career later than the typcial player (because he played in Japan previously), so he's already 33 years old. He'll be lucky if he can sustain the same quality output of hits for 7 years or more considering
a.) he's going to be getting older and have dimishing output and
b.) he has to stay healthy

you have to remember he's 32 or 33 years old so its unlikely he will play long enough to get to 3000 hits but still a great hitter he will get about 2500 when hes done.

During the Rangers / Mariners game our announcer said he had atleast 2,000 hits in Japan. I would say about 3,000 -4,500.

2997, which will drive fans nuts for the rest of time, and probably lead to a moderately funny movie at some point.
