i was just noting that less soldiers died than the previous 3 months. i am happy about that but was wondering if that is how we measure success in iraq

Not how we measure success. We measure success by the ability of the terrorist to conduct terror. That includes their ability to train, fund and operate their network. That number is down, and that is why they are moving to Pakistan. So in a nutshell, yes it's working and a success, thanks for asking.

We have less troops die in past months.

Was the "surge" working then?

My answer would be NO.

If it WAS working, there wouldn't be any more bombings, killings, and so forth--now would there?

However, let me point out something that the military brass knows all too well:

Without ANY political reconciliation from the Iraqi government, this surge is beyond useless anyway.

It won't matter what the heads in the Pentagon say or do.

I bet you're proud of it too. How many US civilians died from an Al-Qaeda attack this month on our soil? None you say?
