I want to use them to type in numbers, rather than the number keys above the qwerty letters (as I presently do). But the right hand number keys (underneath Num Lock) don't work.

First, you need to have the Num Lock on. That's the only way they'll work. A light should turn on when that button is pushed.

Press num lock to access them.
If that doesn't work then theres probably something wrong with your key board.

turn number lock on should light up its on the numbers keys in right at the top left

you should have a key that says num loc or num LK press it,
the key are locked thats alll
