~If you were really interested and really wanted to know what happened (and continues to happen) there between the three (you don't specify if you mean Northern Ireland or Ireland, you would be reading about it form legitimate sources from a multitude of biases to be sure you were getting a broad perspective of information from which to draw your own conclusions. Since you are asking here, you obviously want some nutshell conclusion from someone who may or may not have any inkling of the facts and about whom you know nothing and about whose credibility you know even less. That being the case, I cannot condescend to offer anything in the way of an answer.

War Between England And Ireland

The present situation is completely defined by past events and would be too difficult to explain without talking about the past.

Who, specifically, make up the two parties of conflict?

In a nut-shell it's English on one side and Irish on the other.
English being loyalists, Irish being Irish now since the Republic of Ireland is not part of Great Britain anymore. Before independence it was basically loyalists vs. separatists.

Many people mistakenly call it Catholics vs. Protestants. That's not really what it is and that's not what it was. Most of the Irish were Catholic and a majority of the English were protestant.
This did have something to do with it but it was not the main distinction.

It has been going on for 100's of years.
England started fighting with the Irish way back around 1200.

This goes back about 700 years really. lets see I suppose it began with the Plantation in Ireland at the time of Queen Elizabeth and Oliver Cromwell who took the land of the Irish and gave the land to wealthy landlords in England. They banned Catholicism and education of any Catholic traditions, took the language off the people and all things associated with Irish tradition. The Flight of the Earls from Donegal was a important event in the loss of the old Gaelic Order but I would suggest looking that up it's a lengthy and complicated subject. Landlords were cruel to the Irish charging unfair rent, evicting them without notice. The Irish unhappy with this system started to fight back, some with violence, some with politics. Land Acts were established to try and solve the land question and it wasnt until 1909 that the Birrell act solved it by forcing landlords to sell. During this time Ireland started to push for Home Rule and would have got it only WW1 happended. During WW1 the 1916 Easter Rising occured when the Irish rebels stormed the GPO in Dublin and various other buildings the siege didnt work and the rising was put down. Now most people probably would not have become so angry towards the English at this stage only the English executed the rebel leaders, leading to high tensions and the Irish War of Independence. During the WOI Winston Churchill who was Minister of Foreign Affairs at the time sent over a group called the Black and Tans, a bunch of criminals and men who had gone mad from WW1 trenches. They were feared and despised by the Irish. On one occassion they went into Croke Park and killed innocent people who were just watching a game. They killed without question, didnt care who they killed. It wasnt until the Treaty in 1921 that they left the country. Then Ireland was thrown into Civil War. The fact that Ireland still is not to this day a completely united country also adds to the ill feelings of Irish to English. Today though it is'nt as bad but there are still the nationalists who want a united Ireland. That is the reason, but I would advise you too look it up as i said a vast and complicated subject

thats a really complicated answer....try starting by googling 'cromwell'....not a good guy. basically he went into ireland and did some ethnic cleansing of the catholics...since then, revenge has been a big factor in the back and forth attacks b/n protestants (mostly in the north) and catholics (mostly in the south). however, of course, places like belfast have both catholics and protestants living there, and there are even walls that literally block off different neighborhoods from each other. so yes, start with cromwell and read all about the ira and sinn fein and the easter uprising. quite interesting.

also...a side note, its not 'english' against 'irish' ...irish citizens living in belfast for example are killing other irish citizens living in belfast...different religions and political views....not so simple as english vs. irish

someone asked this question once. que. when did it start? ans. when Strongbow invaded Ireland. Que. when will it end? ans. when Oliver Cromwell gets out of hell England invaded Ireland, settled Protestants in what was a Catholic country since St. Padraic's time. Cromwell will never get out of hell; we can just hope it can be settled peacefully. the problem now is mostly political, i think...england vs Ireland

it used to be the kingdom of england wales Scotland and Ireland. English thought they own everything for centuries. why do you think the colonies revolted? Ireland did the same thing but it just took them a century and some decades to revolt.

Im Irish myself...

Well this could be a very long answer. But I will shorten it down for you

-The Start
Britain invaded Ireland because they are greedy and like to invade weaker countries to spread their filth and iggnorance. The Irish fight back because we do not want to lose our culture and wan to continue our lives of freedom. The Brits wont have this so they will rape the land, deprive the people kill women and children. The Irish will fight back by attacking them with all we have got, usually failing.
-The Middle
Ireland is now a horrible country to live in Prodestant landowners own pretty much most of the land and the Irish people are hungry and weak. The Irish have been deprived of everything they once had and are now hungry. The Famine(1740-1741). starts killing 2 million people die of starvation. Ireland loses half its population as people flock to England, America, Australia, Canada, Argentina.... 200 years later in 1916 a group of brave Irishmen start a rebellion in our own capitol of Dublin... This rebellion was lead by Patrick Pearse and James Connolly, the reason "Belief that non-violent means of attaining Irish independence had failed" After this rising many of the rebels were killed by the British without trial, this caused wide-spread anger throughout Ireland... After this Eamon DeValera and Michael Collins discuss a treaty with the Brittish... This leads to an Irish Cival war between Free Staters and Republicans, over Britain keeping 6 counties of Ulster (north of Ireland).... This cival war caused many deaths between Irish people 4000 people died.
Ireland was declared a free state. Michael Collins was shot dead. Eamon DeValera took control and formed Ireland into its own nation

-Last 50 Years (The Troubles)
In Northern Ireland the slight majority are unionists who are presbyterians. (NOT PRODESTANTS) they strangely believe that they have the right to be here! They should be kicked off the island because they did nothing but invade it. We Irish do not accept them as citizens. They have no culture and did nothing but absolute terror to this land! In Northern Ireland fighting has been going on for years between Catholics and Presbyterians bombing eachother. The IRA bombed Omagh and parts of England (evil crimes) the Unionists bombed Monaghan and Dublin (evil crimes)... Northern Ireland is now split into different areas of Irish and Unionist strongholds... Eg. East Belfast is very Prodestant. West Belfast, Derry and South Armagh are very Irish Catholic.

-These Days..
Fighting has totally stopped, Ireland is rich haha! Britain has left Northern Ireland in an absolute kip with unemployment and gang actrivity thriving. Hatred is still there. We rioted in Dublin opposing a unionist march.
