To be more specific, is it a plus that she can intelligently defend herself and her positions or is it a negative that she feels she MUST ALWAYS defend herself?

In politics, the best thing is don't let yourself be put on the defensive. If politicians don't want to answer a question, they always make statements that have nothing to do with the question.

Answer: She should defend herself and her positions. This is what the campaign and election is all about. Furthermore, I think she can do it and do it well.

She needs to point out to thinking voters how she differs from Obama and Edwards, so if they challenge her positions she needs to defend them.
