I went to my county courthouse today thinking that I could get a copy of previous sales agreements/contracts of people who have owned my home before me. Unfortunately, all they have are copies of deeds and mortgages. My problem is that I need to know who was living in my house when there was a fire here, and if the previous owner (before me) knew about it, because I was not told about it myself. Do you know of any place I can get this information?? I have no problem paying for it. I just can't seem to get what I need. If it's any help, I live in Ocean County, NJ - Toms River to be exact.
Thanks so much!!

Contract copies are not public records and aren't recorded in any courthouse. Try prior owners for sugestions

A title abstracting company will be able to chain the title of your property back among as many prior owners as you want them to. This would give you a list of the people who owned the property and the "time line" of when they owned the property. For example, it may tell you that Mr Able owned the property from May 1, 2002 to November 15, 2006; that Mr Baker owned the property from January 2, 1993, to May 1, 2002, , that Mr Charlie owned the property from June 1, 1984 through May 1, 1993, and so forth. The actual date of the fire may be difficult to determine. Neighbors may remember when it happened, and they could help you pinpoint the date as to whether it occurred in a particular person's tenure on the property. I am not sure your local fire department could provide you with the date of the fire or not.

It may be difficult to locate prior owners of the property unless they have remained in the community. However, using the Yahoo! People Search, you should be able to locate them if they have a published telephone number wherever they live in the united states.

Go to a title insurance company and give them the address and the date of the fire. They can look up who was owner of record with the recorder of deeds. The fee should be modest. Or, you can try it yourself at the recorder's office.

The deeds will record the owners of the home.
