Ive heard of having sex to bring on labor and Ive heard it really does work.. but is it safe to do after you've already started to dilate? And if so, is your partner supposed to ejaculate inside of you or (as silly as it may sound) will it hurt the baby?

Sex does work. I had sex the other night and the next day I lost my mucous plug. It's definitely safe to have sex when you're dilated, just not after your water is broken. And if you want to bring on labor, then he need to ejaculate in you since his sperm is what helps to soften and dilate your cervix. Also, it helps if you have an orgasm since it will contract your uterus.

It can work. The semen is what actually starts the process of labor, so yes, he will have to ejaculate inside of you. It won't hurt the baby because that child is still enclosed in the amniotic sac. Why do you want to start your labor? Just let it come naturally! That's what's supposed to happen!

Yes, unless your doctor says not to, it should be just fine. And yes, he should ejaculate inside of you. There's something about the ejaculate in you that helps bring on the contractions. It worked like a charm for my wife with both our daughters.

yes!! unless your water has broken, head to the bed!! orgasms causes slight contractions, and if done at the right time (babys ready) they will get stronger. the ejaculation has a chemical in it that helps dilate; i forget which chemical it is, but its just a smaller dose of what they use in hospitals to medically dilate you.

My doctor said it was fine as long as your membranes arent ruptured. There is pitocin in the sperm that helps to thin out and dilate your cervix. No the sperm wont hurt the baby. Its not like its a toxic substance lol. Yes sex has worked for me twice to date and i hoping third time is a charm!!

The prostagladin in semen will help to soften ('ripen') the cervix, and can also cause contractions.

Also - the woman's own orgasm can cause contractions as well.

Heck - hospitals use a variation on this all the time - the prostagladin gel that they use in inductions is made from pig semen !

I've heard that - but every time I tried it with my wife, she'd look at me and say "You've got to be kidding!"

Then we'd have a big fight, and THAT always seemed bring on labor just fine!

"New Study Rejects 'Old Wives' Tale', Shows Late Pregnancy Sex Generally Safe

June 2, 2006 – The notion that having sex late in pregnancy will hasten labor and delivery is among the oldest of old wives' tales. But it looks like the old wives were wrong.

Women with a low risk of complications who had sex in the final weeks of pregnancy actually carried their babies slightly longer than those who abstained from sex during that time, according to a new study reported in the June issue of Obstetrics and Gynecology.

And the full-term babies born to women who had late-pregnancy sex were just as healthy as those born to women who did not.

"This study should reassure low-risk women that there is probably no harm in engaging in intercourse late in pregnancy," says obstetrician Jonathan Schaffir, MD, of the Ohio State University Medical Center. "But it showed no particular benefit, either, in terms of inducing labor.""
