So I have to buy my boyfriend a birthday gift and I was thinking of starting him off on a good power tool. He lives in an apartment right now so space is limited and doesn't really do to much but I don't want to get him a crappy one or one that has to much power that he will never have to use. Any suggestions?

Get him an 18 volt cordless DeWalt drill with a 1/2" chuck. The best most reliable tool you could have. A dremel is a good idea too but I dont use mine all that much. In my businesss I use my drill all the time but I also use it alot at the house.

Ryobi tools are getting better all the time. You dont need to saty away from them. In fact I bought one, a 12 volt, 13 years ago and it just died last month. Thats not bad for a $59.00 tool. They have come up in price since then however. I have more exspencive drills , but that one was for "around the house", and I was more than pleased with its performence.
If you want to go a little better, then I would suggest Milwaukee or Makita drills. Both have a long standing reputaion as quality tools and will do any "apartment " job nicely. A 12 volt for around the house is more than powerful enoug and anything over 14volts will be way more than he will proably ever need. Unless he plans on building a house with it. I have been a cabinet maker for 24 years (and yes cabinet makers use cordless drill all the time) and have never had need for more then a 12/14 volt. And I would agree, that, other than my routers and woodworking machines, my cordless drills are my most used tools.

I have the perfect answer for this! Go to Sears and check out the cordless equipment! You ca get him a 19.2 volt cordless drill, sawzall, flashlight, jigsaw and a circular saw for about $200 to $250. I have had mine for years and abuse them very good. They have been on construction sites as well! I will never talk bad about Craftsman tools because I always have great luck with them! If you can't afford all of that, just try pricing the tools separately! You will not be disappointed!

I'll have to agree with the cordless drill. THE most useful tool everyone should have in their home. You can hang pictures, build the boxed furniture, repair all sorts of stuff and you can take it anywhere. It is the most borrowed tool I own!
Porter Cable make good stuff, as does Bosch and DeWalt. Personally, I'd stay away from Ryobi.

As a man that uses tools in my daily business, I would recommend a gift card to Home Depot, Lowe's or any of the other hardware stores. I am very particular about my tools. I like to feel them in my hand before buying. I like to look at the information on them and compare stats with other brands. I hope this helps. dp

Get him a good (at least 18 volt) cordless drill. If you want to spend more, you can get the kits that have more tools that work on the same battery. Always a useful tool.

a good cordless is the best. make sure it has 2 batteries. maybe a drill starter kit with drill and screwdriver bits. i like to have a flashlight that uses the same battery. its useful in the dark and you can also finish off a dying battery before charging it which helps the batteries longevity. oh and you are good girl friend good idea you have.

get him a good 12 or 14 volt cordless drill, nice to have around the apt good for putting things together such as furniture etc..comes with screwdriver bits. less than 50 bucks

What a thought full GF," Harbor freight" has a nice kit it has a drill, flashlight,sander, saw.All in one case, for around $40.00. cheap but multipurpose. Oh they all run on the same battery comes with a charger too I've got this kit and love it.
