Kids will put almost anything in their mouths because they're curious, mostly. I wasn't aware that many children eat sand, but actually eating something inedible is called, "Pica". (Not the key size on a typewriter). This is a psychological disorder that is not exclusive with children. Pregnant women often have a strange appetite for things not commonly associated with food. A child who frequently ingests sand or other inedibles should be watched closely, and/or seen by a doctor. Some things are poisonous or could cause bodily harm.

Small children experience texture not just with their hands, but also with their mouths. It is a normal process, and should be encouraged safely. Sand does not fall in the safe category. Also, some children eat sand or dirt due to a lack of nutrients. This is called "pica", and a child who simply refuses to stop eating dirt and sand should see a doctor.

Children are known to do piontless things. I have had a ton of bad experiences, with children in the past 5 years. I know what to tell you, and believe me or not, children are not as educated and smart, as a normal. They haven't been taught yet how life goes and what to do and not to do. Children don't know they shouldn't eat sand, and they will learn from it soon or later on. Anything they do wrong, the will eventually learn from it.

My sister used to eat sand till she was 5-6 and she is the most mature and sophisticated person I know now. I used to eat cement and paint when small as I liked the scent of it and the texture was grainy. I still like the smell of petrol :) .
I guess its ok if the kids eat it provided it does not hurt them as the digestive system goes for a toss and I still remember My sis used to have lot of worms in her stomach and medication for that was quite regular for her. So not to panic but definitely need to watch out for.

From birth to about 2 yrs, kids are very oral.
Everything goes right to the mouth. That is how they try and understand it.

Sometimes they will do it over and over until they realize this is not a good thing. They are experimenting.

If this continues on well past 2 years , there may be a problem.

becuase they like throwing up. lol jk

i agree with the "pica" answers, and the children do pointless things answers, but the nutrients ones are bullcrap (i mean that in the nicest way possible) becuase little kids have no idea about nutrients and sure wont go looking for them in sand if they do.

its mostly just being curious... and normally they dont do it again after the first time.
trial and error.
