Have you never heard of clothing patterns by McCalls and Simplicity???
They usually include explicit sewing instructions for each pattern as well as fabric suggestions (cotton vs. polester, etc.)
Your local sewing machine sales and repair center can help show you how to correctly operate your machine.

Go to your free public library and sign out some sewing instruction books. Then go to a place like Wal-mart or JoAnn's fabrics and buy supplies.
