I love the USA. My family has fought, died and been crippled for this country and I don't want to live anywhere else. But I vote, I pay taxes and according to my Constitution I can question and comment on anything I care to. It seems to me that with things like the Patriot Act among other things that we are slowly losing our freedoms.

You are right! We gave up a lot with the Patriot Act. The president uses the term "national security" to rob us of our rights. They use the fear of another 9/11 to get what they want. You cant stop a terrorist act from happening on U.S soil. Us Americans are ignorant for thinking that to begin with. No other country in the world has been exempt from this or havent had some sort of internal uprising. Now they may not be able to hi jack planes again but i believe there are hella sleeper cells waiting to do something. You have the President and his cabin having secret sessions, doing illegal wire taps on everyday citizens. Its ridiculous. Us as U.S. citizens have basically let the Judicial, Executive and Legislative branches run our lives without any of the public input. We are blind to whats truly important. We can worry about Michael Vick and his dog scandal but we are not as horrified that we have US soldiers dying everyday for us. They do 3 or 4 tours in dangerous places but have no clue of when they are coming home. Then we have our President insulting our intelligence with his gold ole' USA slogans of " dont mess with Texas or the US" to make us have some sort of pride. Its a joke

Due to exigent circumstances, such as our country being in a state of heightened alert, the president and Congress have the right to temporarily abridge certain freedoms, for the good of society.

However, six years after 9/11, I think the emergency level has receded, and the Patriot Act and their ilk need to be rescinded.

We are - and it's not happening slowly. You may think it is because the mainstream media isn't doing their job (which is to make this democracy work by having informed citizenry) and giving you all the information you need. Check out the documentary by Aaron Russo called "America: Freedom to Fascism". You can watch it for free at www.freedomtofascism.com .

You're right, we are. First he took our rights away, No more Habius Corpus (sp) and then he spied on us, tortured in our name, and blew us in to the whole world hates us..but then he's the worst President in recorded history poll wise, that low rating is the ONLY thing he actually did earn. For the sake of the country he must be impeached, or the next President will have more and more power to abuse. Impeachment was meant to control that abuse tendency..we'd better step up or we're lost. I vote too but then with Dibold counting votes and Bush stealing them, what can we do? (see Hijacking Democracy) on HBO documentary. Worth seeing, it'll shock you to see the out right abuse there in throwing out Gore Votes..

No one's rights, property or privacy is safe while the legislature is in session.

That has been true since the first Congress and remains so today.

There were anti-sedition laws 200 plus years ago and other Congressional powers created that were at those times considered far-sweeping and generally dangerous legislation.

Our rights are eroded not when laws are passed, but when the people become apathetic to the passage of those laws, and their later enforcement in ways never imagined.

So if our rights are being slowly eroded, it is only because we are not paying attention!

Wake up everybody. Time to start looking at what your legislative delegates are doing and how badly they're screwing up your lives.

We live in a Republic, not a democracy. So, the USA can't possibly be the best democracy. We are losing our freedom, because people are letting it happen. If the majority of people do not take a stand, then we will deserve every freedom they take from us.

best democracy is pretty subjective these days, b/c some of the european countries are just as good as us; and have more freedoms and less wasteful spending. This isn't the 1800's anymore.

No. We are more free today and have more rights than before the sixties. Just ask any black person. We do have a ways to go however.

Since 9/11 the only change I've seen is at the airports. Personally I haven't seen one restriction or abolishment of any rights we have.

Liberals want the USA to lose it's world power status. They do everything in their power to make this happen- they support trial lawyers, taxation, labor unions, socialism and anyone who hates the USA; support liberals and assure your children they will be like France, a former world power that is insignificant in global issues.

Well, at least the democrats in France are honest enough to call their party the "socialist party". Our socialists are in denial; they can't even admit the reason they hate Bush, Cheny, Haliburton, corporations etc is becasue they represent capitalism.
