I prefer informational/vocab books as opposed to long novels to increase my vocab as I have a reading comprehension problem :) Thank you for any suggestions!

First I'd say that long novels are not your only option. Try reading plays or a collection of essays. Reading often is the best way to absorb vocabulary.
If you insist on a vocab. book, Word Smart is a series that many high school teachers use. It groups lesson words in a way that students find useful.

Not strunk and white! It's a style manual.

Keeping the dictionary at hand is probably the best choice.

Try Reader's digest. They're full of word quizzes and lessons where you can test yourself. So to use them to
learn, just study the answers after you quiz yourself.

Maybe keep a notebook of the words so you can skim
them. And remember you have to use a word 10 times (at least) to make it your own. (That's one place where skimming yesterday's words helps. It helps fix it into long term memory.)

Reader's digest is especially good because it is ongoing. Each month, new reading, new quizzes. You can pick them up for pennies at library sales.

Go to Dictionary.com and sign up for the word of the day. The website will then email you everymorning with a word and you can increase your vocabulary by concentrating on that one word for that day. That way it wil help you remember it rather then just reading 100 definitions in one sitting.

The Elements of Style, by Strunk & White. It's brief, and quite excellent.
