Processed food is less expensive than fresh . . . My grocery bill has increased over 80% since eliminating all frozen and refined foods (with the exception of ice cream).

I was in a grocery store one time where the woman in front of me in line used food stamps to buy junk food like candy, chips, jerky etc. She spent over $30 on junk food. I found out that any type of food that is not heated (ie hot deli food) can be purchased with food stamps. You can use food stamps for anything from fresh/frozen/canned fruits, veggies, meats to junk food, candy, soda etc.

As far as food stamp recipients not having enough food stamps to make it through the month all I can say is just like anybody else they have to budget what they do have. They get a certain amount of food stamps according to income, what their housing costs are, how may people in the household, etc. I think that the woman I saw spend over $30 of food stamps on junk food is taking advantage of the system. Dont get me wrong, even if a person is on food stamps they should be able to have treats now and then but $30 in junk food is just over the top. A person on a limited food budget like that will probably run out of food stamps before the month is over and then they will be sorry that they spent so much on junk food. And, more than likely, they will complain that they are not receiving enough help from the government (food stamps). I better stop now before I rant on and on about this.

As far as people not having enough depends on their family size and income. For example...My sister gets $284 a month because she is a full time student with one child and no income. Whereas my aunt has 5 children and gets en extra $110 per person over what my sister gets. BUT- my aunts children are a LOT bigger and so eat A LOT more. So yes you can "run out of foodstamps"

And as for hte people who say you shouldnt be able to buy ANY junk w a food stamp card. Youre telling me that because she needs asistance my sister 's 3 year old son shouldnt get to have ice cream during the summer? He shouldnt be able to have a birthday cake for his birthday? Or he cant have some potato chips?? how about a cup of soda? I'm sure your children get to eat these things why cant someone on public assistance give these things to their child? MOst of te people on puclic assistance are parents...most DO NOT abuse the system. I just think that until you see what these people deal with you should leave them alone next time you see them buy a bag of potato chips.

.No...I would hope that fruits and veggies are what people are buying. Some states don't allow "junk" food to be purchased with food stamps. Things like potato chips, candy, etc are not allowed.

No, that would leave out essentials like fruit and milk.

Food stamps breaks down to about $21 per week. A gallon of milk is around $3.50 in my area. You do the math.

I think food stamps should not be used to buy junk food, alcohol, expensive name-brand foods, etc. Other than that, raw or cooked is fine.
