Put in new fan but it is still not running. Have been informed that computer will overheat if kept in use with out fan running.

What could be the problem?

System boots perfectly with no errors.
Have a Dell Dimension 4300 (desktop).
Did a test to check hardware on computer--no alerts or errors.

Note: I don't hear the power supply fan running either but someone said that if this fan went out, nothing on the computer would not be able to work or even power on.

Your mb may not be getting the voltage from the ps required to make the fan run. OR it is getting the voltage and it is not getting to the CPU fan. I would lay money on the PS. Change it. If that does not work, your out cheap. MB is a lot more expensive to replace.

If the power supply fan is NOT running, it will BURN up the power supply (that's the fan's job afterall-keep it cool). If the fan of the cpu is NOT spinning and you plugged it into the motherboard, you need to unplug it from the motherboard and get a adapter that will allow you to plug it into the power supply itself (one of it's cables).
And if that power supply really isn't spinning, you need that replaced quickly. If you're not sure take the computer to a local computer store and allow them to look at it.

your computer wasnt running so you put a fan on it?
and you were running your computer without a CPU fan??

If thats the case than what you have done is teach yourself an expensive lesson. Most likley you fried something. Grab someone that knows about computers and have them troubleshoot your pc. You will probably have to replace a part

now to save you more pain, don't use your system, yes your power supply will work without the fan running within it, try moving the power pin to another supply pin on the mother board there should be more than one fan connector on the board. if that don't work get another power supply for your system... it will cost you around $60/$70 for a new power pack.
