I advocate feeding fish twice a day. Once with flake or pellets in the morning and once with a frozen or fresh food in the evening.
Fancy goldfish live to an average age of 15-20 years when well cared for. There are planty of exceptions well over 30 years and the record is 43 years, but you asked average ;)

If you keep your goldfish in a bowl he wont get very big and wont live long at all because the water quality will be very poor. If you keep him in a tank with filter and do weekly water changes of 10 - 15% they can live till 14 and way over. They can also grow to about 14 - 17" depending on your tank size.
I would feed twice a day, put in some flakes and watch him eat if he eats it all add in a little more, you should remove what food is uneaten after 2 min or if the fish losses interest in the food

dont forget that a fishes stomach is only the size of 1 1/2 eyes.
So you wont need to feed them too much.
if your using pellets, look at 2-3 pellets a day, and for flakes, 1 small pinch.
They will eat what you give them, but too much will cause bowel problems. and bad water.
Most goldfish sold are under 1 year, but it does depend on many factors.

Feeding is dependent upon what fish you have. Just like people, some fish will eat alot and others will be picky. To determine how much to feed you'll need to trial feeding them once, twice, three times a day and see if they eat everytime. If not, reduce the time you feed them and spead them out evenly. I feed my fish three time a day and they'd eat 5 if I feed them that much.

Gold fish can live for many years, they have longevity. Well feed them once or twice a day, you can change their diet in a wide number of food. I preffer pellets for them. They get from insects in the water animal protein.
