This is the time to make your voices heard, and to make it happen....so what do you see wrong that you want fixed by whomever you elect next?

Frankly, what I see wrong that needs to be fixed is the divisiveness of the people.

I don't understand this referral to one another as political beings rather than people...you know what I'm talking about...all this name calling of "you republicans" or "you democrats".

"YOU" are your neighbours to the left and to the right of you.

If you act divided, so will your politics be divided. So I think the time has come to build bridges between the two.

This is what you need to look for when you vote for your new president.

Hans: because it's too extreme...you need more balance. It's not up to the parties it's up to the people, and if people put major pressure on government they WOULD start fearing you and not the other way around....

Which leads into user2000's comments of being afraid of your government...I think you're right but there is something majorly wrong with that.

Well JimSock I agree with everything you've said however I think it's the political division that has caused many of those problems.

I really have to wonder if the world needs the US as much as you think it does, or if that isn't just American WANTING to have their finger in every pie so to speak.

I quite agree that if you were to pull your military out, focus on America, it's security, it's people, it's welfare, that the rest of the world would learn to do just fine without you. They'd manage.

Trust me...you've never heard the old saying the world will go on with or without you?

100 years from now not one of us will be here. It's a new day, it's a new dawn, yada yada yada...another generation will carry on, but what are teaching them to do?

I agree with American Rebel that one of the top issues (if not THE top issue) should be securing our borders and immigration reform. We need to get those who are here illegally out and stop others who try to come here illegally.

Actually, I think the key problem is even more basic than you suggest. You talk about building bridges between the two parties. I believe that the two parties are the biggest part of the problem, but not how you think. It's not Republicans or Democrats who are the enemy; the people that we really need to get rid of are the politicians. The people on Capitol Hill really don't give a crap about the American people. All they care about is wielding power, being above the law, and milking the system for all it's worth to forward their own selfish motives. Look at the congressional record and see how many of them have been nailed for DUI or have defaulted on loans or can't get a credit card or have been arrested for any of a long list of offenses that would send you or me to jail, yet they never even have to answer for them.

What is the only one thing the people on Capitol Hill can agree on? Voting themselves a pay raise every year. Any other piece of legislation that goes through is loaded with riders for pork-barrel projects that are a huge waste of the hard-earned and paid dollars of the American taxpayer. And what about the billions of dollars changing hands in D.C. every year when politicians get handed large envelopes by political action committees and special interest groups? Isn't it clear by now that our legislative process is not a truly democratic one but an auction block where the laws go to the highest bidder?

No, what we need to think about when we vote for a new President and new Representatives in 2008 is getting some new blood in there (and getting rid of the wastes of space that are there right now lining their pockets with our money while thumbing their noses at us). The only way we can have any hope of getting our country back to having a government of the people, by the people, and for the people is to THROW THE BUMS OUT!!!

Political division is part of the dynamic that has made this the most successful nation in history along with the separation of church and state.
I do agree that name calling is not productive but, it sure seems to be a lot of fun in a chat environment. Don't worry, no one here is going to have an impact on public policy.
If I were to fix something it would be international engagement. We do it too much. It's time for us to ween the rest of the world off dependency on us.
We need to withdraw incrementally from defending or interfering with other countries and turn those resources inward. Security is the number one issue for me. With what we spend overseas, a fraction of that money could help create fortress America in lieu of strategic bases around the world. Not necessary.
Once that's done the military can be consolidated and streamlined and the money used for education and investment.
Costa Rica is a good example. They did away with their military completely and now have a 98% literacy rate among many other improvements in health and the environment.
Foreign investment is booming and so is tourism.
It's doable.

Repeal the Patriot Act--it violates the Constitution.

Initiate tort reform to help stop out-of-control health care costs.

Decriminalize most currently-illegal narcotic substances. The War on Drugs failed 20 years ago--didn't you get the memo?

Decriminalize prostitution, an economic transaction between two adults. If you don't want your spouse to engage in this behavior, then hire a divorce lawyer.

Recall *all* troops stationed anywhere in the world and restructure how we deploy the military. If you want our military help, then you can PAY us for our efforts UP FRONT.

Allow people to opt out of Social Security.

Strengthen border security. A wall/fence is unrealistic, but periodic manned outposts could work.

Repeal "hate crime" laws. There are already laws on the books against assault, murder, etc. We don't need "thought police".

They need to go back to the Constitution. If they did that then most of the problems would go away. Do away with the Federal Reserve, which directly violates the Constitution by having our money in the hands of private bankers. The list is a mile long, but it doesn't matter, because it's not going to get better only worse. It's all bought & sold.

Stop being politically correct! It's always the politicians having hidden agenda for their own personal gain. It's always the minority that's getting the favor than the majority.

Other politicians don't want to secure the borders because they need hispanics votes. Same goes applies with religion.

ONLY IN FRANCE CAN YOU FIND THE GOVERNMENT SCARED OF ITS PEOPLE AS IT SHOULD BE.

Have more public space; we are too atomized in our houses, cars, cubicles, etc.. And to your other point, almost every country I know of has this friction between two or more parties and their followers. I don't know how you would remove that.
I also don't refer to the US as "America," since America is technically the word for the entire western hemisphere.

What isn't wrong with America, health care; the extreme gap between rich and poor. The love of the movie industry the ignorance of their knowledge of other countries.

Like Barack Obama says: "We need to secure our borders." And then worry about the next business at hand.
