You're misinterpreting the symbology. The cross isn't used as a symbol of death, it's used as a symbol of recognizing Christ's sacrifice. That's why Protestants take issue with Catholics using a crucifix (which has an effigy of a dead Christ on the cross) as opposed to a plain cross. Protestants assert that Christ should not be remembered as being dead, because he rose from the grave and ascended to Heaven. Catholics assert that you can't truly appreciate Christ's sacrifice if all you see is a barren cross.

It is only the Christians who associate the cross with God. Like much of the Christian imagery, it is done to promote guilt feelings, without which you do not need saving. The cross is to remind you that Joshua ben Joseph was crucified, and that Saul of Tarsus insists it was because we are all inherently evil.

This is the major undercurrent in most religions: you are guilty, guilty, guilty! Without guilt you do not need to atone, and God will leave you alone.

Christmas was moved to December 25th to catch the Romans feeling hung over after the Saturnalia, when they were obliged by their religion to party, and most marriage vows were suspended. Guilt is good for business.

Islam is the same. Grovel to Allah and confess your unworthiness. Judaism is a little different as their Talmud states that each person must find their own way to God, and that proselytizing is therefore in bad taste.

That's a very attractive idea, isn't it?

Actually, it is kind of funny. You would have to go back to a guy named Bill Hicks, who was a comedian from Texas and a very funny man, not to mention very wise for his age.

He said that he found it amazing that the symbol for Christianity is a cross. Paraphrasing what he said, do you think that Jesus, upon returning to the Earth at the Second Coming even wants to see another cross as long as he lived?

It would have been like walking up to Jackie O. with a rifle pendant on. "Just thinking of John, Jackie. In tribute to John, I wear this pendant for you. Just thinking of John, baby".

LOL!

Lenny Bruce did a great routine on this.

Basically he said that he's grateful that Jesus didnt come to us in recent times because he doesnt want to have to deal with parochial schools full of kids with little electric chairs dangling from their necks.

I know what you mean. If JC was to come back, don't you think he would freak out if he saw people wearing crosses? That would be the last thing he would want to see.

your looking at it in the wrong context. the cross is a symbol of how much he loves us. If you focus just on the specific details of what happened to him then your missing the point of why the cross is an important religious symbol.
