I'd have to say it's a tie between Island of the Blue Dolphins and The Swiss Family Robinson. Both are basically about the same thing, being stranded on an island, but with the first, it's a girl who is alone. The second is about a family that is shipwrecked. I'd suggest both of them, they are really good reads.

these are some books that i thought were pretty good:

twilight by stephenie meyer (more for girls but guys can read it 2)
new moon by stephenie meyer (sequel to twilight)

maximum ride: the angel experiment
maximum ride: school's out-forever
maximum ride: saving the world and other extreme sports
(those are all by james patterson)

night by elie wiesel (really sad but really good)

the last book in the universe by Rodman Philbrick (more for kids 12-14)
