YES, because you are downloading things (script, images, etc) just by viewing the website. Most large sites are making your browser pull images/ads/scripts form lots of 3rd-party servers (Google Analytics, etc). A malicious site can make you download anything they want just by going to the site.
The scripts and images you download can contain exploits for specific browsers.
What can you do about it? Download the latest service packs and updates. Even if using Linux you have to keep up on security patches, the hackers are usually ahead of everyone else.

Yes. More likely you would get some sort of spyware, rather than a virus. If you're having a problem, I suggest you install both virus protection software AND spyware protection software. There are MANY different manufacturers out there some of the major ones are Symantec (makers of the Norton suite), McAfee, AVG (offers free version of their software), and many others.
