I have a male red blonde guppy (its white with an orange tail) and I wanted to get 2 or 3 females to breed it with. What color females should i get? Is it possible to get a specific color if the male is orange (if I wanted to get green or blue fry, does the mom's color help determine it)?

Also does anyone know what color they will turn out if you cross the orange male guppy and a blue or green female?

Actually the females color is more important than the males color in guppy breeding.

Now, if you want a specific color of guppies, you really, really need to have a male and female of that color. Otherwise, you will spend a few generations getting the gcolor to breed true again.

If you go to a really good shop, they will probably trade you your male for one the color you want and assist you in selecting a female that will heklp you get the colors and patterns you want in your line of guppies.

Welcome to the world of guppy breeding, feel free to email me if I can help

Fish colors are not like mixing paint to get certain colors. You must start with one (preferably both) of the parents having the color you want in the fry.

The gene for blue only produces blue, the gene for green only produces green. When you mix them, you get blue fry and green fry. Both parents will determine what colors the fry are. Although if one color gene is a dominant gene, that is the color you will get until those fry grow up and breed. Then you will get a mix.

I have an albino male bushynosed pleco that spawns with a regular brown bushynose female. They only produce brown fry. The fry, however, have both genes and if they reproduced with each other you would get 25% with albino genes, 25% with brown genes and 50% with both genes.

it really doesnt matter as he will breed with any color guppy.

But for specific breeding, you will want to geta female that is ver simliar to him prehaps even a sister. That way the blood line stays clear.

If you wanted to get a green or blue guppy fry, the best thing to do is geta pair of blues :) That way you can be assured to get that coloration, generally, some factors can affect it though.
