Ok lets get down to the basic's if your looking for a decent anti-virus software id say go with pc chillin suite by trend micro its amazing at catching virus's in the works and it doesnt slow the computer down when your trying to complete task its also very user friendly to the new and very easy to pick up on. as well as a pop up blocker & firewall.

i dont recommend norton or any other listed programs above because they ethier use to much system resources or they are very poor at stoping advaced polymorphic, encrypted virus's.

Now lets get into firewalls thier are two kinds of firewalls (Software) And (hardware) Now the software ones are the ones that you have to install on the os (operating System) for the most part they work but they wont keep some one out if they want in bad enough

(hardware firewalls) now these bad boys are good for keeping you invisible on the net as well as stoping attacks meaning if the hackers cant find ya then thier is nothing to worry about also because its hardware and not software theirs no threat of files changing or being alterd by virus or melicious content

How to install one simple : connect the modem to the hardware firewall then to the computer or if you have a router to the router then the computer that easy.

I recommend this one http://www.alphashield.com/office.htm
thier are many out thier but this is by far the best one sporting the most feature for the least amount of money if the link doesnt work copy past into your browser

you can pick this up at your local best buy , future shop, londondrugs and or any basic computer supply store.

Having both of these should keep your computer safe and still going at its max potential

also should you have any other questions concerning computer upgrades , overclocking or otherwise contact me and i would glady help you.

"Firefox" + a personal firewall such as "Zone Alarm" + "AVG Antivirus". That's all you need.
Firefox is free & a hell lot better than IE. http://www.mozilla.com/firefox
AVG is the lightest antivirus available free. http://www.grisoft.com/doc/products-avg-anti-virus-free-edition/us/crp/2
Your firewall keep a check on applications accessing the internet & will ask your permissin for suspicious softwares to be allowed to communicate over the net. Just blockem.
