Bisquick biscuits cut in squares -- split, then bottom half soaked in strawberry juice before putting on the berries, then top half on top of berries, a big schlooooop of real whipped cream [chilled beaters & bowl, the old-timey best!] with One Perfect Berry nestled in the whipped cream. One of gran's strawberry shortcakes was almost a meal by itself...she believed in Huge Portions--real plate-fillers!

We always used the old pound cake recipe. Basically a yellow cake. 1# flour, 1# butter, 1# eggs, 1# sugar. Nice an dense cake that doesn't just mush up with the strawberry juice!

Any true cook knows this answer, the best way is with biscuit dough as you put it..
just because of the texture dry top, and the way it holds the strawberry filling jelly or what have you,....
well homemade anyway........smile

my mom cheats and buys the buttermilk buiscuits from Kentucky Fried Chicken and uses them. I gotta say, they're pretty good.
when I was still ridin motorcycles just everywhere all the time, and I wanted to make a dessert on the road to impress a chic, I'd cut a twinkie in half lengthwise and smother it in crushed strawberries. also very good.

My grandma-buscuits. They were always so good. A mound of fresh strawberries-most likely picked that day, and a dollop of home-made whipped cream on top!

I always use biscuit mix. Mom & grandma are not good cooks. :-)
I'm getting hungry over here. I have Potato & Leek Soup. Would you like some? I'll reheat it first.
