Make sure it is real wood. Some panelling is particleboard or low grade plywood with a finished film adhered to it. It you sand this type of panelling, you will likely have to paint it, replace it, or install new panelling over it.

Some of the old real wood panelling was sealed with an oil or wax after it was stained.

You have to find out if this is the case.

Have a reputable wood finisher inspect it - this would be the best way to make sure it is what you think. A reputable wood finisher can also do the job for you and/or advise you the best way of DIY.

Good Luck.

Talk to your paint store about an antique finish, its actually a white/grey stain it usually lightens the existing stain some what, it can be done with out having to strip the existing hue and a lot of work. You have the option of trying a spot to see if you like it.

There is a product that you can use to lighten the wood tone.I would go to a home supply store and inquire about it.I am sure they can help you.You are correct about not painting it.

NOPE sand and use a light stain--but you need a pro to actually take a look. Don't use paint.--ruined forever.

Put paneling over it (don't use glue, you might want to remove it someday).

Did you know you can get panels with designs. Very pretty.
