My guinea pig loves eating hard, uncooked spaghetti, but I don't want to feed it to him if it will hurt him. Is spaghetti okay for guinea pigs to eat?

Like acanoffleas said, spaghetti is made up of carbs and flour. In little bit's it will not hurt your guinea pig but guinea pigs are vegetarians so uncooked (or cooked) spaghetti should not be a staple part of his diet. Your piggy likes spaghetti because it is hard. Guinea pigs teeth are continuously growing and if they do not eat hard foods they can get serious teeth problems (which can lead to death, because the guinea pig will not be able to eat due to his overgrown teeth so he will literally starve). Instead of spaghetti why not try giving him untreated branches off a tree, a wooden block from a pet store, toilet rolls stuffed with hay and/or parsley, plain cardboard boxes made into a house, newspaper scrunched up into a ball. There are plenty of things that you can make from home that your guinea pig will be able to use to file his teeth.

No. The only reason why your guinea pig eats the uncooked spaghetti is because they'll have something to chew on. By this, guinea pigs like things that are crunchy, rough to eat, and a little tough for their teeth. The fact that spaghetti has flour inside of it is what isn't good for your guinea pig's health. Flour, from that, has a whole lot of carb, which is not good for your guinea pig. I mean, why give them uncooked spaghetti when you can give them a whole bunch of vegetables and fruits they'll most likely enjoy? Even from the cuteness your guinea pig will have on you, don't give in.

A little won't hurt it. My kids used to munch on raw spaghetti all the time. No explaining kids and gunea pigs I guess. I wouldn't let your guinea pig have very much spaghetti, however, because it will expand with the liquid and heat inside it's tummy. A little goes a long way.

Your guinea pig likes it for its texture, i.e. the hard crunchiness, not for the taste. Spaghetti is made of flour and other carbs, which aren't really part of a healthy guinea pig diet, so honestly I wouldn't recommend giving it to him. Little bits won't necessarily "hurt" him, but it's not doing anything good for him either. Try giving him more things to chew, like homemade toys - toilet paper rolls stuffed with hay, tissue box with a door cut out of it, etc., sticks, and lots of hay.

Yes! That is actually good for your guinea pig. a guinea pigs diet should be 75% grass/ timothy hay (NOT ALFALFA!) 20% guinea pig food and 5% treats. thats my guinea pigs diet too.

Spaghetti is a wheat product, and will be OK as long as your animal doesn't show any sensitivity.

they enjoy chewing on hard things, that's why they make those flavored wood and eatable houses for them. they don't eat pasta... check out a local pet store for the all the fun things you can find there.

Sure. Just make sure you break it enough into little pieces. No one wants an eye poked out. =)
