Because life is about caring, and if you don't care you are dead, or as good as dead.
How many questions here on Yahoo Answers are from young people who are DEPRESSED! Nothing to live for. Thoughts of suicide. People who have passion in their lives don't get so badly depressed. It doesn't really even matter what you care about, it's all about CARING.

It's human nature to care... we all care about at least someone out there, some are more generous than others.

because its what motivates people. Without motivation the act of doing things becomes mechanical or reactive. You might not care to go to work and put up with your boss, but you care about your family so you are motivated to get paid.

That depends on what you are thinking about. There are many things I care about and quite I few I find too trivial to merit my consideration.

I pick and choose what to care about, because you have to care about something. Life is not something that should be wasted, and caring is one way to enhance it...
