I have an Intel Pentium D 3.0Ghz processor and lately, for no apparent reason it will spike to 80-100% usage for a split second(enough to skip music, video or the likes). It does it regardless of what programs I have open, firefox, IE, winamp, or anything. I'm running Windows XP. I was thinking maybe I had spyware, but I can't seem to locate any at all. Any ideas, or possible fixes? It's quite annoying and I'd like to fix it.

I've turned off all running tasks in the msconfig editor. I've monitored the the processes tab in the task manager and when the cpu usage spikes, non of the tasks register the usage.

I know it has to be the processor because I even get mouse lag. Perhaps it's even the video card, but I doubt that.

sounds like it could be nvidia's drivers perhaps.

a good old uninstall reinstall display drivers might work.

if not,

try using windows defualt display driver instead and see what happens.

check out whats running in the background, could be caused by a program startup or worm, disable any start up programs you dont need, scan for spyware and all that other good stuff.
